Neil Young has issued an ultimatum to Spotify: either Joe Rogan goes or his music does.

The Joe Rogan Experience is a podcast/video show that streams on Spotify. It has been accused of spreading COVID-19 misinformation, with the host questioning a lot of the common wisdom surrounding prevention and treatment of the disease. Some of his commentary is reasonable, a lot of it is false and concerning.

This doesn't sit well with legendary musician Young who wrote an open letter to his management demanding that his music be removed from the service:

“Please immediately inform Spotify that I am actively canceling all my music availability on Spotify as soon as possible,” reads Young’s open letter. “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading false information about vaccines — potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them.”

“Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule,” the statement continues. “I want you to let Spotify know immediately today that I want all of my music off their platform. They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”

In a showdown between Neil Young and Joe Rogan, Rogan wins out - the loss of Rogan would negatively impact the value of stock and cause subscription cancellations. A loss of Neil Young won't really move the needle. But... if this leads to a number of other artists calling for the same, Spotify might have a real problem on its hands.

Spotify have an exclusive distribution arrangement with Rogan for his show, but it doesn't own the show. And it doesn't control editorial. But it does have influence and can make the final decision as to whether to keep the show on platform or not.

RIP Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol

A TV series based on Dan Brown's book The Lost Symbol, which if I remember correctly is a prequel to The DaVinci Code, has been cancelled by streamer Peacock. The show felt about five years too late to ride the coattails of interest in Dan Brown's books/lead character Robert Langdon.

The show never caught much traction despite being kinda okay.

Ch... ch... ch... changes

Jerry Seinfeld has a bit about the uniform way that a groom and his groomsmen are dressed at a wedding. The idea being, as Seinfeld suggests, that if the groom doesn't turn up to a wedding, they all look the same so they can just move one step over and the wedding can go ahead.

The same thing exists in TV casting.

Emilio Estevez left the Mighty Ducks TV series for some sort of vaccine hesitancy issue. Now it has been announced that Josh Duhamel will now take over in the role. Squint your eyes and you won't notice the difference.

Meanwhile yesterday it was announced that Julian McMahon is leaving FBI: Most Wanted, which I am reliably informed is a show. Joining the cast (in a pretty massive upgrade) is Dylan McDermott.

Fight Club now has a new ending

Do you remember the classic ending of the movie Fight Club? Edward Norton has a realisation about what he's been up to and fights himself at the site of a terrorist action which ends in a rather explosive way.

That's not how the movie ends anymore. At least, not if you watch it in China where it has just debuted on a streaming service. Now the movie ends in a far more iconic way - a way that I am sure is more in line with how David Fincher originally envisioned it...

With a title card.

The police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler was sent to lunatic asylum [sic] receiving psychological treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012.

An incredible end that is absolutely in line with the spirit of the movie.

Review: The Gilded Age

Streaming now on HBO Max in the US and Paramount+ here in Australia is the new drama The Gilded Age. Ordinarily costumed dramas aren't my thing. But I was rather taken with this one from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.

Julian Fellowes follow up to Downton Abbey is a huge New York-set series that lays the groundwork for modern America.
