Two big TV titles this week and they both kind-of stink. Flat, by-the-numbers, and bores, both of them. A Man In Full is the latest David E. Kelley limited series. Like all of his work, it is competent and well-paced TV. But it has no spark to it at all.
Steven Knight’s spy thriller The Veil has the exact same problem. And like A Man in Full (which stars Jeff Daniels with a really silly southern drawl), The Veil saddles star Elisabeth Moss with her own awkward accent. Here, she seems to be channeling Gillian Anderson’s UK look and sound.
I’m keen to check out the Anne Hathaway film The Idea of You which asks: What if a smokin’ hot woman who looks like Anne Hathaway somehow caught the attention of a Harry Styles-like popstar. Seems incredulous.
I’m less keen on Jerry Seinfeld’s debut as a director and live-action star. Unfrosted has had terrible reviews across the board and it has been “supported” by an odd press tour where Jerry is talking about everything except the fim. And then when he does have something to say about the movie, it was about how he didn’t want to make it.
Will Unfrosted be worse than either of Larry David’s movies? I can’t wait to find out.
I’m sorry to be so curmudgeonly in this week’s email. I feel like I have the Jay Shermans about me.
