Renegades, Gentlemen, and white-haired comedians. Your week’s guide to television.
The weekly Always Be Streaming TV guide
It’s always a treat to see renowned sitcom murderer Ted McGinley (AKA “Jefferson”) back in a TV show. I could do without it being in a TV show produced by and starring Roma Downey, so I will probably give this Prime Video show a miss.
A few thoughts for your long-weekend TV viewing:
A Gentleman in Moscow is perfectly amiable viewing. The Ewan McGregor light-drama is from Ben Vanstone, the guy responsible for the All Creatures Great and Small revival. If you enjoy TV at that pace with drama at that level, you will have a great time with the show. I enjoyed it, but found some discomfort at watching a Russian story told from a very British perspective. It lacks an authenticity.
Renegade Nell I haven’t yet seen, but it is high up on my list of must-watch shows this weekend. From Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack) and with a great cast including Louisa Harland from Derry Girls (she played Orla), Adrian Lester (Hustle, Primary Colors), and Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso), it has the pedigree behind it. Plus it has a very favourable review from my beloved Sally Mangan at The Guardian.
I really liked the 2-part Steve Martin documentary on Apple TV+. The first part is mostly a retread of his really good book about his stand-up comedy career, Born Standing Up. That is all fine, but the second part is where I found genuine insight into the man. I’d suggest it is a great watch for both fans and well-wishers.
