The future of AI video is Ronald McDonald in a Love Island hot tub
The launch mid-week of OpenAI’s video-generation app Sora has led to a pretty big freak-out over copyright concerns.
OpenAI advised Hollywood studios that if they have copyright concerns, they can file opt-outs. But, in order to do that, they need to send examples of the breaches. And it can’t just be a blanket list of copyright violations - it needs to be done IP by IP.
What’s wild about this is that it isn’t just images - this is complete video with sound, meaning that if you want to create that ultimate mix-up of Family Guy characters meeting Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids, you can just get busy and start loading in the prompts.
From CNBC:
Powered by OpenAI’s upgraded Sora 2 media generation AI model, the app allows users to create high-definition videos from simple text prompts. After it processes one-time video and audio recordings of users’ likenesses, Sora allows users to embed lifelike “cameos” of themselves, their friends and others who give their permission.
The app is a recipe made for virality. But many of the videos published within the first day of Sora’s debut have also raised alarm bells from copyright and deepfake experts.
Users have so far reported being able to feature video game characters like Lara Croft or Nintendo heavyweights like Mario, Luigi and even Princess Peach in their AI creations.
This is a pretty solid example of the Sora app at work:
RIP Star
On Oct 8 we will tearfully (?) say goodbye to the brand we have all come to know (??) and love (???): Star.
That’s the brand Disney uses globally (outside of the US) for all of it’s grown-up entertainment programming on the Disney+ app. It’s not really a brand anyone has ever developed an affinity for, if they even noticed it exists at all.
In its place will be the Hulu brand, which people do recognise, even if it has only been a brand used in the US and Japan.
Disney announced a few months ago that Star would be replaced with the Hulu brand, so the news today is that we have a date next week where it is happening.
With the brand-switch, it is believed that Disney will spend more money promoting Hulu internationally to build up recognition of both the brand and the grown-up content available on the Disney+ app.
Also, there will be some tweaks coming to the app experience.
Disney+ over the next few weeks will introduce “a more visual home screen,” as well as more intuitive navigation and more personalized recommendations. “These enhancements are just the beginning, with additional updates planned in the lead-up to the launch of a unified app experience next year,” Disney said.
