The REAL Emmys where real people win awards for real work
Every year we sit down to watch the Emmys and comment on the outfits, criticise or celebrate the winners, and laugh along at the inane jokes on stage. But very few of us pay attention to the real Emmy Awards, which take place the weekend before the Emmys and award the many, many professionals who work hard and often without much recognition on the shows (and TV movies) that we watch.
I won’t list out all the winners of night one of the 77th Creative Arts Emmy Awards, if only because there’s a PDF with about 15 pages of winners listed. You can read through that on the Academy’s site.
There were a couple of categories I thought were worth highlighting. I have kept the guest actors out of the below list, wanting to keep it all behind the scenes talent…

Seeing Rebel Ridge win Outstanding TV movie is great, but it does further highlight to me the oddity of that category.
Instead of chasing Oscars, the streamers (particularly Netflix) really should take ownership of that category and tackle it with all of its marketing prowess. Instead, all of the best, awards-favourites get nominated for the Oscars, leaving a pretty poor list behind for the Emmys (where the award doesn’t even get a prime time showing). Surely getting this category into the last 20 minutes of the main show should be the objective everyone is working towards.
Night two of the 77th Creative Arts Emmy Awards is underway as I type this.

Set in the tough, unpredictable world of the 1990s US Marine Corps - when being gay in the military was still illegal - the series follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (#MilesHeizer) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine, as they join a diverse group of recruits. Together, this ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits.
